Learning Every Day

Amazing what happens when you chuck your ego out the window, and start actually LISTENING to your horse.

In the past 3 days, I have learned several things, i.e., Stella has told me several things.

She is right eye dominant. She prefers to check things out with her right eye. When she is asked to focus both eyes, this can be difficult and scary. When we are tracking to the right and her left eye is to the outside, she becomes anxious and worried because she cannot use her right eye to survey what's going on.

With that said, she also strains to use her left eye to check things out tracking left. She becomes focused on the outside, drops her weight on her outside shoulder and pulls wide. She doesn't feel quite comfortable coming through her inside shoulder and hind leg.

I get much better results from her when I constantly ask her for attention. I may have to remind her often, but I am having to do less and less to bring it back. A slight shake of the leadrope is all it takes for the most part now.

She also prefers to be groundtied. Being on the crossties is annoying to her. She's quieter, more relaxed and more interested in what I'm doing when she is free to move her head, instead of having it restricted. She responds well when I tell her she can't sniff the neighbor or lick the ground; she is alert and responsive.

Those are just a few things. It's been a fantastic though sometimes difficult few days. Progress comes in baby steps, but these steps are getting very, very noticeable!
